The string sextet Veklärte Nacht was the first step in Arnold Schönberg’s break with tonality.
At the time it was written, everything in the sextet was new during the epoch when Wagner’s music dramas and Liszt’s symphonic poems were still stimulating every young composer to imitate them. Instead, Schönberg turned to chamber music, addressing for the first time the issue of making programme music with a chamber ensemble, for which he used a poem by Richard Dehmel (it appears as a preface in the full score).
The internal dynamic of Verklärte Nacht is principally due to a ceaseless interchange of groups of motifs, some of which surge forwards while others hold back, thus forming the rubato melos so characteristic of Schönberg’s early works. In addition, he exploits the melodic and sonic possibilities of the strings to their utmost; the magical sound of the piece – written by a 25-year-old man – is incomparable.
(Jascha Horenstein on the sextet, excerpt from Pult und Taktstock, March/April 1927 issue)
