Edward Naylor was born in Scarborough, England on 19. February 1867, the son of organist and composer John Naylor. After initial musical education with his father he studied at Cambridge and at the Royal College of Music in London with Stanford and Frederick Bridge. He held appointments as organist of St Michael's, Chester Square, and St Mary's, Kilburn, before returning in 1898 to Cambridge as organist of his old college, Emmanuel, where in 1904 he was appointed lecturer. His extensive output of church music is still in use today. A leading authority on Shakespeare and music, he was an early exponent of greater musical authenticity, publishing several books on these topics. His chamber music was never published, but the bassoonist John Parr of Sheffield performed it in his concert series and made his own copies of it. These include three short wind quartets as well as the variations for piano and wind. Naylor died in Cambridge on May 7th, 1934.
