Bohuslav Martinu's first String Trio, written in late 1923 and early 1924, is the first work he completed in Paris after becoming a private pupil of the French composer Albert Roussel. It was probably performed twice in Paris in the course of 1924 and received its Czech première in 1925. Thereafter Martinu asked his friend Stanislav Novak to take charge of the scores of his works performed in Prague , for he kept no sketches or manuscript copies of them. Then his fears came true: the sole copy of the trio vanished. It was not rediscovered until autumn 2005, when the handwritten score and the viola and cello parts resurfaced in the Royal Danish Library in Copenhagen . This short three-movement piece represents a direct link to Martinu's more mature chamber music of the late 1920s. It already reveals a masterly command of compositional technique and a sophisticated sense for exploiting string timbres. This present Urtext edition is published by Editio Bärenreiter Praha as part of the new performance editions of MartinuÆs music. First edition based on the rediscovered autograph Preface and critical commentary by Eva Velicka (Cz ./Ger./Eng./Fr.) Practical edition at the cutting edge of Martinu scholarship.
