Robert Lindley was born in Rotherham on 4. March 1776. At the early age of five he received violin lessons with his father, before he took the cello four years later. By the time he was 16, he had made such progress that the younger James Cervetto undertook to give him free tuition. Almost immediately, Lindley was summoned to the Brighton Theatre to deputize for a soloist; his performance caused a sensation and he was engaged by the theatre. In 1794 Lindley succeeded John Sperati as principal cello at the Italian Opera in London and at all major concerts.
Domenico Dragonetti joined the Opera the same year and he and Lindley shared the same desk. They achieved a new style and were a demanded duo not only at the Opera, but also the Philharmonic, the Ancient Concerts etc. Lindley was appointed professor at the newly opened Royal Academy of Music in 1822. His compositions include four concertos, duets and a tutor. He died in London, four years after his retirement, on 13. June, 1881.
Robert Lindley was regarded one of the best cello players of his time. His technique appears to have been outstanding, and his tone remarkable for its fine quality and volume. His amazing accompaniment of recitative was his outstanding achievement; it has been described as "most elaborate and ingenious.. The trio in F major was published in 1810 by Clementi, Banger, Hyde, Collard & Davis in London. Grade of difficulty: professional.
