Productomschrijving

Vasily Kalinnikov was forced to break off his studies at the Moscow Conservatoire in 1885 through lack of finance. He then studied the bassoon until 1892 at the Moscow Philharmonic Society Music School, where he took lessons under Alexander Ilyinsky (1859-1920), a student of Bargiel, and Pavel Blaramberg (1841-1907). As a student he composed his first orchestral work, the symphonic poem The Nymphs, premiered in Moscow on December 28, 1889. Tchaikovsky, who had a very high opinion of Kalinnikov, recommended him as conductor at the Maliy Theatre in 1892, which he left a year later to join the Moscow Italian Theatre. In Autumn 1893 he fell seriously ill and moved to the Crimea, where he spent the remaining seven years of his life. In 1895 Kalinnikov completed his Symphony No. 1 in G minor (the finale being in G major), on which he had started work the previous year, and dedicated it to the St Petersburg critic, Semyon Kruglikov, his patron, who immediately launched a vigorous campaign for its performance, despite Rimsky-Korsakov's negative reaction. The premiere of the Symphony No. 1 took place on February 8/20 1897 in Kiev at a concert of the Russian Music Society, conducted by Alexander Nikolaevich Vinogradsky (1855-1912). It was an enormous success and repeat performances soon followed in Moscow (under Hermann Zumpe [1850-1903]), Vienna, Berlin and Paris. Kalinnikov composed his Symphony No. 2 in A major in 1895-97; it was premiered on 28 February (12 March) 1898 in Kiev during an extraordinary session of the Kiev branch of the Russian Musical Society. The conductor and dedicatee was again Vinogradsky, who on the day after the premiere sent the following telegram (in French) to the composer: 'The symphony was a great success. Andante repeated. Great ovation after the Finale. Six curtain calls. I greet you from the bottom of my heart. Vinogradsky.' The Second Symphony was performed for the first time in Moscow on 8 March 1899, but even in these early years the First Symphony quickly and durably established itself as by far the more popular of the symphonies of the young composer, who died not long afterward. Kalinnikov's two symphonies were published in Moscow by the Tchaikovsky friend Pyotr Jurgenson (1836-1904). The First appeared in 1900; score and parts for the Second appeared the following year.
