This work by Gottfried Finger comes from the Sünching Manuscript, an autograph scribed between 1670 and 1682 that primarily contains numerous sonatas and suites for two violas da gamba. This Suite, however, was written for barytone and viola da gamba with the peculiarity that the bowed barytone part is superseded in the middle of the Passagalia by a treble part.
In our edition, we have assigned the two barytone lines to an additional viola da gamba and the basso continuo, and suggest a change from the bass to a treble viol at the abovementioned place. Finger’s barytone suites are not composed in the virtuoso manner of many of the sonatas for two viols in the Sünching Manuscript, but the music is nevertheless very charming and many-faceted, and offers a very special effect through the change to treble viol.
Dieses Werk Gottfried Fingers stammt aus dem Sünching-Manuskript, einem Autograph, das zwischen 1670 und 1682 entstanden ist, und das im wesentlichen zahlreiche Sonaten und Suiten für zwei Violen da Gamba enthält. Diese Suite ist jedoch für Baryton und Viola da Gamba geschrieben mit der Besonderheit, dass die gestrichene Barytonstimme mitten in einer Passagalia von einer Diskantstimme abgelöst wird.
In unserer Ausgabe haben wir die zwei Stimmen des Barytons auf eine weitere Viola da Gamba und Basso continuo verteilt und schlagen an der beschriebenen Stelle den Wechsel von der Bass- auf die Diskantgambe vor. Fingers Barytonsuiten sind nicht so virtuos komponiert wie manche der Sonaten für zwei Gamben aus dem Sünching-Manuskript, aber die Musik ist besonders reizvoll und vielfältig und bietet durch den Wechsel auf die Diskantgambe einen ganz besonderen Effekt.
