Alessandro Longo was born December 30th, 1864, in Amantea (Cosenza). He received early piano lessons from his father Achille (1832-1919), before studying at the conservatory in Naples with Cesi and Serrao. He later taught there as a professor for piano from 1887. Longo was founder of the Società del Quartetto and the musical magazine Larte pianistica. He is perhaps best known today for his monumental edition of the keyboard works of Scarlatti; to 544 sonatas he assigned a "Longo" number, which for many years helped to identify them. As a composer he wrote mainly works for piano and chamber music. He was successful in combining solid principles of German instrumental style with Italian vocal traditions. The attractive Suite for Oboe and Piano op. 65 has been published first in 1915 in Milan. It belongs to the few works which dispensed with virtuosity and therefore is perfectly suited for amateurs and students. Longo died at the age of 80 on November 3rd, 1945, in Naples.
