Gabriel Foignet, harpist, music teacher and composer, was born in Paris in 1790, in a musical family, where the harp was already an issue: in fact his father, Charles-Gabriel (c. 1750-1823), was born in Lyon but moved to Paris in 1779, to teach music, harpsichord and harp. He actually was his own children's first music teacher. Gabriel's brother, François (c. 1783-1845), was a well known opera singer; he gave concerts in Paris, Nantes, Lille and Angoulême; he also composed some successful operas, such as Les Noces de Lucette and Les Gondoliers. Nevertheless, he died in poverty in Strasbourg. The young Gabriel was taught his first harp lessons by his father and eventually studied with Jacques-Georges Cousineau (1760-1836) and with François-Joseph Naderman (1781-1835). He was a good concert harpist and an appreciated teacher, particularly in the period 1812-1825 (when the first harp class was opened at the Paris Conservatoire). He also worked with several orchestras, the most important being the Opéra-Comique, which he left in 1821. In 1828 he stopped his concert activity and retired. He certainly died after 1842, date of his last known composition. The present edition is based upon the print published in Paris chez l'Auteur and chez Naderman between 1825 and 1828. The title page reads as follows: Première / SONATE / Pour la Harpe / Avec Accompagnement de Violon obligé / Composée par / G. FOIGNET / Et Dédiée à son Maître / F. J. NADERMAN. The musical text was preserved as close as possible to the original; use of accidentals, ties and dots have been modernized.
