Edouard Lalo (1823-1892). French composer. Lalo studied at the conservatories in Lille and Paris, and with several private teachers. In addition to his early chamber works and songs, he composed for the stage, but had trouble finding an opera house that was interested in performing his works. That he was first to succeed with instrumental works is remarkable, in that Parisian audiences were normally far more interested in opera. Concert music was thought to be 'too German'.
Lalo's first success with his concert works, which did not come until the composer was in his 50's, included his Aubade, the Divertissement, and his Symphony in G major.
In 1874 the violinist Pablo de Sarasate gave the first performances of Lalo's Violin Concerto, and a year later, his Symphonie espagnole for Violin and Orchestra. Two years later, he composed a Cello Concerto, which has retained a place in the repertoire. His Norwegian Rhapsody is also admired. Yet among his instrumental works, it was the Symphonie espagnole, infused with Spanish color, which garnered his first international acclaim (and remains Lalo's most popular composition).
Lalo's Sonata in D major Op.12, the composer's only existing sonata for this combination of instruments, has a relativily early place in its composer's catalogue of musical output.
