When authors have achieved an appealing arrangement for the instruments available, this often leads to unusual chamber music combinations, as in this Sextet of contrasting voices, deemed worthy of publication beside the similarly scored work by a composer 'colleague'. The undated Paris print, in parts, of ca. 1770 is titled: QUINTETTO / DEL SR. TOESCHI / DUOI SEITETTI / il Primo del SR. Cannabich / e il Secondo del SR. Toeschi / Per il Flauto traverso Oboe Obligato / Violino Alto Viola fagotto E Basso / MIS AU JOUR PAR MR. HUGARD DE ST. GUY / Prix 6tt. / A PARIS / Chez le Sr. Borrelly The musical text of the parts is almost flawless, except for missing octave signatures. Phrasings are lavish and meticulous; signs of expression are sporadic, and have been completed by analogy. The bassoon part is alternatively titled: Fagotto vel Violoncello.
