Nicholas Sims-Williams was born in Kent in 1949. He began to compose music while still at school, studying theory with Paul Steinitz and composition with Sir Lennox Berkeley. He eventually chose to devote himself to languages rather than music as a profession. After studying Sanskrit and other oriental languages at Cambridge, he has pursued a successful career in this field, and currently holds the post of Professor in Iranian and Central Asian Studies at the University of London. He was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 1988.
Many of Nicholas Sims-Williams' compositions are for wind instruments. He is himself a horn-player, and married to an oboist. This Serenade is a substantial piece lasting about 18 minutes. It is scored for 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 horns and 2 bassoons, with the second flute doubling on piccolo, the second oboe doubling on cor anglais (in the first movement only), and the second clarinet doubling on bass clarinet (in the last movement). If a bass clarinet is not available, the second clarinet should play the alternative part for clarinet in A provided on page 7, and other instruments should play the bass clarinet cues printed in their parts. For this first publication, the music was set by C.M.M. Nex and F.H. Nex from the manuscript.
