Literature for bassoon quartet from the 18th and 19th centuries is distinguished by its slumber in libraries. The little repertoire left to us by such masters of the genre as François Devienne (3 Quartets op. 73, Amadeus BP 1130), Franz Krommer (2 Quartets op. 46, BP 1104), Antonio Rosetti (Quartet B flat major), Georg Wenzel Ritter and Franz Anton Pfeiffer inspires us to bring to the music market new editions (and often the first scores) of the best pieces. One of these is Johann Friedrich Dotzauer's lovely B flat major Quartet, op. 36, whose melodic flow with the light-hearted Rondo Finale leaves nothing to be desired. As source for our edition we used the undated first print of the parts from 1814/15. The almost flawless first edition was easily set in the so-called urtext manner. Dynamic marks and ornaments needed completing by analogy.
