During my days studying the bassoon in college, I always got the impression that the Premier Solo by Eugene Bourdeau was one of those minor pieces, meant to be played early on as a student before being able or allowed to play the “real” repertoire. Originally composed for the Concours of the Paris Conservatory, there really is a lot going on in such a relatively short piece. At first glance, it appeared it would not be a suitable candidate for a piece to play on the bass clarinet, as there are a lot of technical demands that seem well-suited and specific to the bassoon. However, much of this centers around concert pitch F (a ‘G’ on the bass clarinet), and fortunately it just so happens that both of these notes are “open” fingerings for each instrument. Once that was realized, the piece transposes really well for the bass clarinet! Included are a part for a standard-range instrument (to low E-flat), and for an extended range instrument (to low C), with the latter being identical to the original bassoon part. Minor corrections to the original edition have been made, and some dynamics have also been added in a few places where they obviously omitted. I hope you enjoy this charming solo, not only a great piece for students, but a great addition to the bass clarinet repertoire. Matt Johnston
