Productomschrijving

Friedrich Wilhelm Voigt was born in Kassel on 22 March 1833, the son of military staff oboist Christian Voigt. First music lessons from his father led to studies in Leipzig and Berlin with Ferdinand Hiller among others. In 1857 he succeeded Carl Engelhardt as director and conductor of the 'First Prussian regiment of guards', later becoming director of the Potsdam operatic choral society; he held these posts until 1887. On 29 April 1887, Emperor Wilhelm I appointed Voigt first inspector of Germany's army music. As the highest ranking military musician, Voigt was involved in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870/71, provoked by Bismarck, and had to march from Potsdam to Paris 'on foot with the 1st regiment of guards'. From there he wrote shattering letters home, impressively describing the campaignÆs 'misery and great distress'. From 1874 he taught at the Berliner Hochschule für Musik, becoming a professor in 1886. Friedrich Wilhelm Voigt died in Bernburg on 22 February 1894. As a composer, Voigt left over 100 works, mainly for wind band, most of it marches, which include the Deutschen Feldherren-Marsch, the Kaiser-Friedrich-Fanfare op. 84, the Regiments- Marsch des Colbergschen Grenadier-Regiments and the Stolzenfels-Marsch. Many of his marches are still performed today by German armed forces. His transcriptions for wind band from Richard Wagner's operas are also remarkable. His few other works, mainly chamber music, show a high level of technique and melodic imagination. Besides ouvertures he wrote greater and smaller vocal pieces, string quartets and the present wonderful 'Nocturne', a musical gem, harmonically daring and with a masterly balance between wind instruments and piano. We present the work according to the first print, published in 1886 by Oertel in Hannover. To ensure wider diffusion of the work, the horn part has been transcribed for viola as well as violoncello.
