The present Nocturne is a rare gem, a playful delicacy among his few pieces of chamber music. It illustrates Tillmetz's excellent sense of form, both in melody and figuration, when writing for the flute. The dialogue with the horn seems to owe something to his friend Franz Strauss. We present the work, dedicated to 'His friend and colleague Herrn Bruno Hoyer, Royal chamber musician and chamber virtuoso', according to the first print of 1898, titled: 'Nocturne / für Flöte, Waldhorn und Pianoforte / componirt / von / Rudolf Tillmetz. / Op. 31. - Pr. M 2.50. / Leipzig, Fr. Kistner. [plate number 8976].'
