The eleven compositions by Alessandro Scarlatti, which appeared in the collection entitled Mottetti sacri,1 printed in Naples in 1702 by Michele Luigi Muzio, came to be published through a process that has only been partially explained by modern musicology. The anthology must have been in circulation as early as October 16, 1702, when Lorenzo Di Lorenzo, a young assistant at the conservatory of S.Maria di Loreto in Naples, made a handwritten copy of the motet Infirmata vulnerata. However, the compositions probably saw the light of day before February 28 of the same year, when Luís Francisco de la Cerda y Aragón, duke of Medinaceli, viceroy of Naples and indirect dedicatee of the work, ended his mandate and left the city. The finding of two receipts detailing payments from Scarlatti to the printer,4 dated respectively 1697 and 1701, allow to infer that the composer repeatedly drew from his funds over a five-year span to finance a publishing project, whose only evidence, according to current knowledge, is the above mentioned 1702 print. As of today, the actual path that led to this publishing enterprise is not entirely clear. It remained an isolated case in the career of the Sicilian master, and there is no evidence that any other of his compositions went to press upon his initiative. However, the years between 1707 and 1708 saw a new, unauthorized edition of the Mottetti sacri by the Amsterdam printer Estienne Roger, who had already published a collection of cantatas by Scarlatti, also - presumably - without the author's consent. With a more stylish and usable design, the new edition, which only included ten of the eleven compositions contained in the Neapolitan Muzio edition, came out with the title Concerti sacri,8 and was referred to as opera seconda, since the previously published cantata collection had been listed as opera prima.
