To the great regret of viola players, Vivaldi, apart from the six Concerti for viola d'amore, left no original concerto for viola.
This transcription of the 8th Concerto from the L'estro armonico collection of concerti is an attempt to remedy this by offering viola players one of Vivaldi's most popular works. Transposed an octave down, the solo parts have a unique baritone-like register.
The editor has exchanged the soli in measures 86-99 of the last movement to enable the first part to enjoy the wonderful cantilena as well. The orchestral accompaniment has been left unchanged, including continuo part, as available from Amadeus in the original score and the orchestral parts edition (BP 1083).
