Sikorski Music Publishers have at their disposal an entire series of frequently performed chamber symphonies based on string quartets of Dmitri Shostakovich by the great adapter Rudolf Barschai. Until now, there had not been a comparable adaptation of a string quartet by Sergei Prokofiev. This situation has now changed thanks to a congenial adaptation by Daniel Sánchez Velasco. The Second String Quartet, Op. 92 “based on Carbadinian themes” was composed during the period that was surely Prokofiev’s most productive and interesting phase. It was written in 1941, about ten years after the First Quartet. At that time, Prokofiev had returned to the Soviet Union after a short “break”. He left Moscow to escape the attacks of the Germans, temporarily residing in the Caucasus. Here he also found inspiration in the Eastern folklore of his homeland. In a letter to Miaskovsky he wrote: “It seemed to me that a connection between the unexplored Eastern folklore and a classical form such as that of the string quartet could bring about interesting and surprising results.” 56 pages.
