The roots of "En saga," Jean Sibelius's first known tone poem, do not entirely go back to an orchestral concept. During his years of study in Vienna (1890/91), the young Finnish composer first conceived an octet and then, in 1892, a septet. A little while later he changed his mind again and wrote the orchestral work "En saga," whereby he ascertainably used themes from the now lost chamber works. Gregory M. Barrett's approximate reconstruction of the once-envisioned septet was given its first performance at the Brahms Hall in the Musikverein Vienna on 14 June 2003.
