The composition “Bipolar. Study for violin solo” (2014) is concerned, on several levels, with two ideas that are opposed yet also run towards each other at the same time. On the surface, the conflict is expressed between playing with the bow and pizzicato. This is manifest in highly virtuosic and rhythmically complex passages, leading in some places to a rhythmic language of extreme conflict. The asynchronisation of the left and right hands is exaggerated, gradually releasing an enormous energy of movement which finds immediate expression in the last section (IV. Allegretto). Another bipolar element is revealed through the sound material. Extreme sound distortion and deformation meets melodic flow; abstract structures simultaneously collide with figurative sections. In addition, microtonal deviations evoke a long-forgotten musical element of violin playing, but are also, at the same time, the expression of a sound spectrum developing ever further. Ultimately a heterogeneous state is (compositionally) created which comes together to form an overall balanced picture through the sum and arrangement of the individual elements. Winning composition of the “TONALi14” competition!
