The ballade Rachel from Toledo op. 16 for violoncello and piano was written in 1972 influenced by the novel Die Jüdin von Toledo by Lion Feuchtwanger. It tells the story of the unrequited love between King Alfonso VIII of Castile and Rachel, the beautiful daughter of the Jewish merchant Jehuda Ibn Esra. In 2006 the ballade has been arranged by the composer for viola and piano (op. 16a). The viola part has been edited and revised by Hartmut Rohde. Intermediate to advanced level.
