Haydn's Applausus cantata of 1768, his first major commission from beyond the confines of Eszterhaza, was written for the Cistercian Abbey of Zwettl to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Abbot's first vows. The allegorical, heavily moralizing Latin text, of a kind popular at this time, hymns the joys of the monastic life and the benevolence of the Abbot in a discourse between the four Cardinal Virtues—Temperance, Prudence, Justice and Fortitude—and the figure of Theologia, embodying the Christian Church. Because of his duties at Eszterhaza, Haydn was unable to travel to Zwettl to direct the cantata. But a revealing insight into his fastidious approach to performance is provided by a long letter he wrote to the monastery. In it he makes detailed comments on such matters as tempo and dynamics (''there is a very great difference between piano and pianissimo, forte and fortissimo, crescendo and sforzando...''), on the importance of the viola line and the necessity of a bassoon doubling the bass: and he gives a precise indication of how the recitatives are to be performed, especially with regard to appoggiaturas.
