Developing a chamber music repertoire in which the guitar is both a concerto instrument and the harmonic support of the musical discourse is one of the most interesting breeding grounds to consolidate this instrument's active participation in the music world. The piano, with its polyphonic ability, has traditionally served as the pillar to build a chamber music repertoire and we now consider it as one of the most solid arms of Western music. The guitar, which also displays an important polyphonic ability within particular parameters, can equally create a significant chamber music repertoire in which the smaller-format structures than those created by the piano have first class aesthetic value and meaning. I was commissioned to write these four pieces by the "Concert Artists" of Baltimore (USA), and I first performed them in this city on 3 May 2009. Upon composing these pieces, I wanted them to have very contrasting natures to test the efficacy of an instrumental combination that I had never before composed for. In them you will find two lively-natured pieces (the first and the last), one which is light and busy (the third) and another which is slow and very sad (the second), which is best portrayed by the viola. The work is a musical joke that is structured around some extraordinary waffles that my friend, violist Debbie Dare, made me for breakfast during one of my stays in Piedmont (California). This work is dedicated to her.
