CAROL: A traditional song for Christmas. The word comes to us from the medieval French carole, a round dance with musical accompaniment. In England, sometime in the fifteenth century, two- and three-part songs that were associated with religious observances acquired the name carol. Most, though not all, were identified with the celebration of Christmas.
The texture of these early examples from the fifteenth to early eighteenth centuries seems ideal for the string trio. Many of the settings are for men's voices, with occasional use of a boy treble.
The later settings are in three and four parts with boys assuming the soprano and alto parts. With the exception of ôWhile Shepherds Watched Their Flocks By Night,ö all were intended for a capella performance, with solo lines alternating with two and three part to full choir responses.
Modern scales and harmonic progressions were evolving during these centuries and some unusual, to our ears, progressions and resolutions were used. I've largely kept to traditional notation except to clarify rhythmic and harmonic patterns. I have selected keys comfortable for strings, assuming a'=440, but tuning down to a'=420 or lower would also be appropriate. Tempo and dynamic markings in parentheses are mine.
