Current research recognizes 184 extant sonatas for flute and basso continuo by Quantz. Of all the contemporary six-work series published, in prints enriched by numerous forgeries, Quantz authorized only the 1734 Dresden print of the sonatas. This edition is based on the Paris print of 1729, titled: Sonates Italiennes, / Composée / Par Mr Quouance (sic). / Flûte traversiere seule, / et / Basse continue, / Trés propres à former le gout ... A Paris / chez Le Sr.Boivin. Recognized as a forgery, the 5th sonata in that print contains a genuine Presto-Finale. We consider this additional alternative movement, which occurs in three further collective prints, an enrichment. To delimit our pieces from the overwhelming sonata output, and without implying any programmatic reference, we have adopted the title of the first print, 'Italiennes'.
