Devienne's posthumous fame is based on his many pieces of intimate chamber music, usually quite easy to play. His Duo output, immense in its diversity, is one of the mainstays of the repertoire for domestic and scholl use. Most of his Duos are dedicated to the flute. Some 140 were published during his lifetime. Written 'early', his twelve Duos for the unusual and rare combination of clarinet and bassoon should soon regain their place now that Amadeus has republished them in their entirety after they had lain dormant for over 200 years. The title of the undated second delivery of 6 Duos in parts reads: SIX / DUOS / concertants / pour clarinette et Basson / Dédiés à son ami / FAGNAN, / COMPOSÉS PAR / F. DEVIENNE, / 2e . oeoeuvre à Clarinette et Basson / Prix 7h10. / A PARIS / Chez Sieber / 1766 [Pl.-Nr.] François Devienne, who was born on the 31st of January 1759 in Joinville (Haute Marne) and died on the 6th of September 1803 in Charenton near Paris, was a doubly gifted musician: not only a much admired flute teacher at the Institut National de Musique, but from 1789 on first bassoonist at the Paris Opera as well. His epochal teaching method, the 'Nouvelle Méthode théorique et pratique de la Flûte' (1795), has remained valid until today. At all times ideally suited to the instruments, Devienne's compositions are remarkable for their consummate ease, charm and unflagging harmonic and melodic invention. His chamber music, especially, reveals the instruments' soul, particularly where his own instruments - flute and bassoon - are concerned, and an increasingly varied number of new editions should soon give it the place it deserves in the repertoire. On the whole, the first print seems most superficially done. Many wrong notes needed correcting. The sporadically missing octavation signs also needed completing. The single movements are sparsely and randomly provided with slurs of articulation und dynamic signs. Where it seemed necessary, we have added some by analogy and comparison of the individual parts. The Chalumeau-range passages that appear in early prints of clarinet parts ('chal' in the present Duets 1û3) mean 8va bassa and have therefore been set an octave lower.
