Editor Couturier points out that Faure was very much a Romantic composer starting out, but became a bridge to 20th century voices such as Debussy and Ravel over his lifetime. His early song "Puisqu'ici-bas toute ame? (based on text by Victor Hugo) was begun at age 19 and would appear a decade later with its companion piece Tarentelle under Opus 10. Both have become standard repertoire in vocal duo performance, originally intended for two soprani or soprano and tenor voices. Couturier sets the two pieces in a beautiful flowing transcription, requiring smooth cooperation between the trumpets and piano.
