The twelve Trios for two E flat horns and violoncello, op. 93, written around 1815 in Paris, show both Reicha's familiarity with the style of the Viennese masters and his intention of creating something new. The choice of instruments, equality of the three voices, interesting forms (No 4 Folie d'Espagne, No 7 Canon, No 5 Allegro risoluto with an ostinato by the second horn), the virtuosity of the horn parts, played on the natural horn at the time of the work's creation, and an astonishing intensity of expression are all signs of this. No autograph of the trios having surfaced so far, our edition follows the almost flawless first print of the parts by Paris publisher Pleyel, which appeared in two volumes. A few illogical and inconsistent phrasings have been adjusted, and missing dynamics added. Playing the violoncello part on a bassoon is perfectly possible and advisable. In the few double stopped passages, the bassoon can usually play the lower/ lowest note. Daniel Lienhard
