Composed for solo piano between 1938 and 1943, the famous 12 Valsas de Esquina (12 Street Corner Waltzes) by Francisco Mignone (1897-1986) do not need much introduction. Covering all twelve minor keys, they evoke an urban imagery of the serestas, choros and waltzes on the Brazilian street corners of the city of São Paulo at the beginning of the 20th century.
On the one hand, they reflect the composer's concern to affirm and attribute a Brazilianness to the waltz. On the other hand, we can think of them today within a musical poetics that, added to the 12 Valsas-Choro (12 Choro-Waltzes), the 24 Valsas Brasileiras (24 Brazilian Waltzes) and other waltzes, it extrapolates nationalist ideologies and establishes itself as a creative, original and individual voice of a composer extremely aware of the ways of classical and popular composition and of piano techniques.
As Mignone himself says, in a well-known declaration from 1968: "I started to write, but these Valsas de Esquina, which seem to be written in a single impulse, some took months before I managed to elaborate and make it simple, without seeming expressionless. It was very difficult." Work that paid tribute to the poet Dora Ferreira da Silva, in her poem Valsas de Esquina de Mignone.
Edited by Maria Josephina Mignone and foreword by pianist Miriam Grosman.
