Sonata for two violins and piano was written in 1939, commissioned by Bronisław Rutkowski (organist and friend of Roman Palester). In the spring of 1939, however, the composer managed to write only the first part, the other two parts of the work were completed after the outbreak of war, in the winter of 1939.
Palester, in his memoirs from 1939–45, states that the Sonata was the beginning of a new period in his creative aesthetics. Starting with this Sonata, a neo-romantic tendency begins in his works, consisting in deepening expression, in its differentiation and enrichment. Since then, he has been moving away from motoric rhythms, "basic" tempo and simplified movements of voice lines in his work. The individuality of each phrase begins, the rich morphology of tensions and the variety of expression.
