Saxophone Duo is dedicated to Paul Harvey, who has worked to promote the proper use of the saxophone throughout his long career. In 1981 Paul Harvey was due to give a concert with his pupil Catherine Shrubsall (the other dedicatee). Finding that the repertoire was limited he appealed to Dr Jacob, with the present happy result. The composer wrote: ''The theme of the variations comes from Smallwood''s Pianoforte Tutor, much used in Victorian and early Edwardian days.
