The manuscript of Salve Regina, an antiphon written for chorus with organ accompaniment, is dated March 13, 1896. This work shows the extent to which Granados formed part of the then current European process of the regeneration of religious music, a movement lead in Spain by his teacher, Felipe Pedrell, among others. Salve Regina, Granados' contribution to this process of regeneration, was composed as an entry in a competition. The Rules required that the winning composition follow the guidelines for Sacred Music put forth by the Hold Congregation of Rituals in June, 1894. The rules, published in the January issue of ôReligious Music in Spainö, which Granados faithfully followed, state that the music must follow the letter and spirit of the Sacred Liturgy, that the music must be written in the polyphonic style of Palestrina, and that the text, being the most important aspect of the work, could not be altered, and further that no portion of it could be omitted nor repeated indiscriminately.5 In addition, the music of the accompaniment by the organ must be perfectly suited to the harmonic character of the instrument, and, that composers must keep in mind that being a religious work, the organ must only support the voices and never overwhelm the text. The herb of love, Although Granados was not a prolific composer of religious music he was a religious person with strong religious beliefs. Granados' faith led him to take a spiritual retreat at the Monastery of Montserrat in February, 1914. During his stay there Granados wrote L'herba de l'amor-Pregaria en estil gregorià, dedicated to the Virgin of Montserrat. The tonality of L'herba de l'amor indicates that it was conceived to be sung by the boys of the chorus of the Escolanía with organ accompaniment. The tessitura of the work, written for high voices, makes is especially appropriate to be sung by young voices. The first edition of L'herba de l'amor was published by Unión Musical Espanola in 1971. That edition did not follow the original tonality but instead transposed the work to F Major. It is assumed that the publisher thought that this change of tonality would make the work easier for adult voices to sing. In the present edition we have preserved the original version of the composition, allowing performers to change the tonality according to their needs. Escena religiosa, for violin, organ and piano, is dedicated to the "Memory of my beloved Dona Cecilia", wife of Eduardo Conde, Granados' patron. Without doubt it was written for performance during her funeral. This is the first edition of Escena religiosa. Escena religiosa was performed for the second time in a concert in New York on March 22, 2007 by violinist Erica Kieswetter, organist Mark Kruczek and pianist Douglas Riva. The concert was recorded by Naxos, 8.57033 in the Naxos catalogue.
