Bach's six quintets op. 11 are part of the genre's 'cultural heritage', and their significance is enormous. They are dedicated to the Elector Karl Theodor von der Pfalz. While living in Mannheim in 1772, Bach received two opera commissions, and expressed his gratitude in the quintets, published in 1777: 'The gracious Approbation of Your Serene Highness to my endeavours at Mannheim, gave me the most unbounded Satisfaction: There, Music and the fine Arts, foster'd by your Protection, and directed by your elegant Taste and superior Judgment, florish with an unrival'd Lustre. ... I humbly offer this small Tribute of Public acknowledgement for the mark of distinction with which you have again honoured me.' The title of the first print reads: Six / QUINTETTOS / for a / Flute, Hautboy, Violin / Tenor and Bass / Composed by / John Christian Bach / Music Master to / Her MAJESTY / The QUEEN of Great BRITAIN. / and most humbly Dedicated to / His most Serene Highness the / Elector Palatin. / London, Printed & Sold by Welcker The first print appeared as five unusually beautiful part books on strong paper. Opus number XI first appeared in the reprint by Amsterdam publisher Hummel. The 'Violoncello' part is figured. The dedication to the Elector appears in the flute part.
