Within the extensive catalogue of works by Enrique Granados (1867-1916) the songs for voice and piano are especially important since, along with his piano works, they contributed, in great part, to the international recognition of Granados as a composer. Granados, being a musician devoted to improving the musical life of his era, made an important contribution to Spanish music by encouraging the performance of songs in concerts at a time when Spain was attempting to find its place in contemporary Europe. Granados also attempted to make a similar contribution through his orchestral and chamber music works, which, unfortunately, remain almost unknown. Nevertheless, the Tonadillas and Canciones amatorias, written for female voice, are among Granados' most important works and are, without doubt, some of the finest and most well-known works for voice with Spanish texts.
The songs with texts in Catalan are not so well-known, although through the edition of Granados' songs by García Morante1 they have begun to find their place in current recordings. In general, the Catalan songs are of great musical interest, and are completely different from the Spanish Nationalism that is usually used, quite incorrectly, to describe Granados' music. One of these songs, Elegia eterna, is one of his most expressive compositions, as is another one included in this collection, La boyra. Had Granados only written these compositions he would deserve preeminent status in Spanish and international music history.
For male voice Granados composed only four songs, all for baritone.
