The three violin sonatas by Edvard Grieg occupy a central place in the composer's output. Together with his other chamber works, these strikingly original sonatas demonstrate how Grieg was able to enhance Classical-Romantic form with Norwegian colouring to great effect.
In the 2nd Sonata Grieg said that he became a nationalist, and certainly the piece is permeated with the melodic, harmonic and rhythmic flavours of Norwegian folk music.
As Grieg's original publisher, some of the most important sources for these works, as cited in the Grieg Complete Edition, are in fact the Peters first editions, dating back as far as the 1860s for the first two sonatas. So it is neatly symmetrical that the new Peters editions afford an opportunity to revisit and update the scholarship in the Grieg Complete Edition (volume 8).
