The song cycle Rosenblätter ('Rose Petals') was composed in 2007 to a commission from the mezzo-soprano Judith Schmid, and is dedicated to her and the pianist Oliver Schnyder. Rosenblätter was awarded first prize at the International Composition Competition of the University of Bucharest in 2008. These fifteen contrasting songs are all to poems by the Jewish poet Rose Ausländer (1901-88). Various (leit-)motifs unify these fifteen scenes to form a single whole, a cycle. Both in the vocal part as in the piano, the palette of colours ranges from pure tone, via various contemporary techniques, to noise itself. In some songs, the music supports the text, while in others it interprets it; and in yet others, it rebels against it. The cycle in total runs through the whole gamut of different emotions.
