Following the republication of VieuxtempsÆ First stringquartet op.44 e-minor (Amadeus BPA 1112), we present herewith his third quartet op.52, first printed in 1884 by Paris publisher Brandus as a set of parts. It is one of the best quartet creations and deserves a place in the concert repertoire. The symbiosis between the workÆs impetuous sweep and brilliant instrumentation and the perfect harmonic and melodic writing is tamed only in the finaleÆs ôSilenceö bars and through the inclusion of a hymn. The musical text of the first print is flawless apart from a few uneven dynamic and articulation signs; the part of the first violin in particular had to be freed from numerous octavations
