Product description

Werner Kruse was born in Zurich on 5 Januar 1910. Having obtained his Piano Diploma at the Music Academy, he took a course in conducting with Felix Weingartner and studied instrumentation with Michael Krausz in Vienna. He rapidly made a name for himself as an excellent improvisator on the piano. Kruse worked as a conductor at the theatres in Schaffhausen, Solothurn and Lucerne, and at the Komödie in Basel. He wrote incidental music for these theatres and for the Zurich Schauspielhaus. He was house composer of Erika Mann's Cabaret 'Pfeffermühle', the 'Cornichon' and the 'Kom(m)ödchen' in Düsseldorf. He composed music for cultural, entertainment, industrial and advertising films, and electronic music for the Swiss National Exhibition in 1964. Besides ballet music, he wrote the music for the comedy 'Der Florentinerhut', to texts by Labiche and Weigel. From 1977 to his death, Werner Kruse lived in the little Grisons village of Stuls, above Bergün. This 'Stulser exile' saw the creation of many works of 'serious music': works for organ, 'Music for Easter Night' for mixed chorus and organ, Preludes and Fugues for piano, sonatas for piano, for violoncello and for violin and piano as well as the present string quartet, which dates from 1993. Kruse's output includes a piano concerto, a symphony in C major, the cantata 'Der Struwwelpeter' for soli, chorus and orchestra, a Concertino for guitar and strings, as well as Eichendorff songs for soprano and songs by Sappho for soprano and harp. Werner Kruse died in Thusis on 18 January 2005. His musical estate lies in Zurich's Central Library.
