'Madronos' is the Spanish word for 'arbutus', a small tree native to Spain that fruits and flowers simultaneously. Twentieth century Spanish composer, conductor and critic Federico Moreno Torroba produced many zarzuelas and other works, but it was his early friendship with master Guitarist Andrés Segovia that inspired him to produce what is considered his best work, a host of pieces or solo Guitar. This one, Madronos, was published in 1954, and was performed and recorded by Segovia. It displays Torroba's commitment to Spanish idioms, as he believed that only by embracing Iberian music inspiration would Spanish music receive the international recognition it deserved.
