In the course of instructions in compositional structures - as well as in my own composing - it appeared to Siegfried Thiele that great significance must be attached to the putting of rests. He sought to find out in which amount and at which places they are appropriate to organize the musical events. During studies in 14th century music (Vitry, Machaut) he encountered various techniques of consciously treating rests within the musical setting, especially in the hocket sections of polyphonic music. That means no more (and no less) than the division of passages by rests in a manner "that, when one pauses, the other one does not, and vice versa". Siegfried Thiele composed a piece that is rigorously obliged to that principle: Inventio hoquetico. In terms of melodic and harmonic construction he departed from the models of medieval music.
