Contemporary women composers in particular have been influenced by literature from the 13th to the 20th century. For instance, an old poem by the famous Persian poet Jalaladdun Rumi has been set to music for a Christmas carol. The technical demands range from easy to moderately difficult. Why not broaden the existing tradition and bring greater variety to Christmas by trying out something new?
We hope you will enjoy playing this music and wish you a happy Christmas.
Who is not familiar with the traditional Christmas carols that are sung every year: 'Vom Himmel hoch, da komm ich her' (From Heaven Above to Earth I come) written and set by Martin Luther, or 'Ihr Kinderlein kommet' (oh come, little children) by Franz Xaver Luft. But scarcely anyone is aware that women composers have also devoted themselves to this genre. Although some of these wonderful carols have been passed down to posterity they are seldom performed. In order to change this situation, the Furore Verlag have started a new series of 'Weihnachtslieder von Komponistinnen' (Christmas carols by women composers) which aims to introduce contemporary works in addition to the 'old' Christmas carols.
The first volume combines a series of international Christmas carols for solo voice and piano by women composers from the 19th and 20th centuries: Janet Beat, Diana Cemeryte, Frederikke Egeberg, Luise Greger, Mathilde Kralik von Meyrswalden, Sibylle Pomorin, Theresia Schlechtriem, Mia Schmidt and Tina Ternes. The words are mainly German, but English, Lithuanian and Norwegian are also represented
