Originators of the Colourstrings approach, Hungarian brothers violinist Géza Szilvay and cellist Csaba Szilvay have gained international recognition as string pedagogues, conductors and educators of children's and youth orchestras. They have taught at East Helsinki Music Institute in Finland since the beginning of the 1970s. In 1972 they founded The Helsinki Junior Strings Orchestra (now known as The Helsinki Strings), which has become renowned through 35 international concert tours worldwide and 31 published recordings. The orchestra has received much praise from the international media. They are authors of the Colourstrings teaching method, based on the philosophy of Zoltán Kodály. It includes 40 publications. The brothers have given 150 lectures all over the world on this teaching method and philosophy.
It is essential, particularly in the early years, that instrumental teaching is of the highest quality. These formative first years are crucial for the child's future in music. The Colourstrings Method developed by Géza and Csaba Szilvay creates a firm musical foundation for the child. At the very beginning of learning to play an instrument the child will master the elements on which all of the later musical and technical requirements are based. The children receive "a musical parcel" which encompasses technical skills, a trained ear for music, a deep understanding of it, as well as outstanding ability in the expression of music. The Colourstrings Method is built on the philosophy, ethnomusicology, and pedagogy of the great Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály.
