In keeping with the ancient idea of combining the physical element of dance with the spiritual element of musical form in a sequence of elaborately composed dance movements, this suite of variations varies a prelude in a sequence of modern dances (i.e. dances danced today). A certain proximity of the prelude to some of Johann Sebastian Bach's suite movements will not stay hidden from the knowledgeable listener, especially its kinship with the a-minor partita for solo flute. A challenge for the player is to make audible the inherent polyphony, which permeates all movements, and to resolve the form's strictness in emotionality and virtuosity of performance.
