Cyclical in lay-out, the trio op. 49, written in 1902 by the highly gifted Sigfrid Karg-Elert and unusually scored for oboe, clarinet and cor anglais is one of the masterpieces of polyphonic architecture. A question remains: what induced the self-confessed 'comrade of contemporary music', with its aleatoric 'noises' and search for new soundscapes, to leave this experimental phase in his work and immerse himself in virtuosic and impressionistic forms, paying tribute to the melodic-tonal heritage? His brilliant music-theoretical skills no doubt helped him spice up his harmonies without any loss of tonal discipline. This also applies to the handling of the instruments: the specific timbres and range of the instruments in the Trio are sensitively handled (the clarinet part making extensive use of the Chalumeau register). The work is dedicated to his Conservatoire 'colleague' Richard Hofmann. It was published in parts in 1905 by the Leipzig firm Merseburger. The unusual signs of articulation should be followed: they help clarify the complex network of fugal writing as it proceeds through the voices.
