Carl Heinrich Carsten Reinecke, born on 23 June 1824 in Altona, died on 10 March 1910 in Leipzig, is one of those figures of German romanticism who lived through several music historical epochs without being in any way influenced by the new tendencies.
Born in the early romantic era, he experienced the creative careers of such opposite personalities as Chopin and Schumann, Brahms and Liszt, as well as the development of the virtuoso and of middle-class salon music. Taught by his father, Carl Reinecke - who never attended school - began by concertizing as a violinist and pianist, before his roving life was brought to a halt in 1860 by his appointments as director of Leipzig's Gewandhaus concerts and professor at the Conservatoire. Prior to this he had travelled extensively: in 1845 he toured half of Europe; a year later he became court pianist in Copenhagen, where he made friends with Niels W. Gade. Further concert tours were followed by posts at the Conservatoire, in Barmen and in Breslau. From Leipzig, Reinecke travelled as soloist and conductor to Denmark, England and Russia, among other countries. Reinecke's reputation as a teacher extended far beyond German speaking countries. His pupils included I. Albeniz, L. Janácek, E. Grieg, Chr. Sinding and J. Svendsen.
