This arrangement for voice and guitar of the 'Second Lute Song' from Gloriana was made by guitarist Julian Bream in 1957 with BrittenÆs blessing. Bream and Peter Pears performed it many times in their recital programmes in subsequent years and also recorded it in 1963. Until recently, however, the arrangement has remained unpublished and is now available for sale for the first time.
In the opera, the Earl of Essex sings his two songs in an attempt to entertain and distract the queen who is preoccupied with matters of state and concerned about a renewed threat from the Spanish Armada. His first song, 'Quick music is best' fails to achieve the desired result but the second, the melancholy 'Happy were he' strikes exactly the right note. Essex accompanies himself on the lute (suggested in the opera by the orchestral harp), making Bream's guitar transcription particularly natural and appropriate.
