SUITE POUR GUITARE by Pierre Malbosc
This is a suite in five movements, with a prelude, tango, sarabande, menuet et trio and a.fugue. If this sounds like it will be in the style of a baroque suite, then you may have to think again. The prelude instantly sets the tone of the work. Marked Libro Come un Preludio (which translates as Free like a Prelude, which is rather silly as it is a prelude, and titled as such at the top of the page!). the work begins with a low 6th String G# clashing into a 5th string A held underneath a run of a 4th string F to an F# to a clashing open 3rd G. This is topped with an open E. A pause ensues, then a semitonal drop to an Eb, a 5th string C# clashing with a 2nd string C natural, held over to a Bb, a B natural, and an open 4th D, leading us with a held chord (from the bottom up) of C#, D, G Band F#; ali this is unbarred. The semitonal clashing and complete atonality throughout tell you exactly what to expect here.
The tango suffers similarly, as, although the rhythm of the tango is there from the outset, the dissonances will ensure that you're on unfarniliar ground. Incidentally there is a C natural (normally, string 2 fret 1) that you are instructed in bar one to place on string 6, which would be fret 20, if your guitar has one. I could go on further about the stylistic extreme dissonances of this piece, but I think it unnecessary as you are probably in no doubt as to the harmonie qualities of the suite.
So, suffice it to say that if you like conventional melodies and harmonies then you can confidently sidestep this piece but if you are a player who has a considerable technique and like your dissonances and atonalities abrupt and as sharp as they can be, then you will no doubt love this work.
