This piece invites to redisvover the oeuvre by Johanna Magdalena Beyer. Born in Leipzig she emigrated to the United States in 1924. She belonged to the circle of the New York "ultramodernists" around Dane Rudhyar, Ruth Crawford, Charles Seeger and Henry Cowell. While in the first of her two suites for solo clarinet, written in 1932, she orientates herself by Charles Seeger's theory of "dissonant counterpoint", the later compositions for clarinet, respectively bass clarinet, and the songs show a quite timely turn to a certain kind of plainness, simplicity, even tonality. The current edition of the Suite for bass clarinet and piano (1937) gives example of that. This work is herewith published for the first time.
