'A very lively Allegro, a not insignificant, pleasant Adagio, and a cheerful Rondo, all quite easy in their ideas and execution, everything appropriate for the two instruments, all presented with the good quality of Vanhal's many earlier works of this kind...' (Allgemeine musicalische Zeitung, November 1811) The music is truly agréable, with the material presented as a gracious dialgoue between the piano and the violin. As the work unfolds, it becomes clear that all three movements are harmonically related through the skillful juxtaposition of the keys of G major and E major. Like the Three Sonatas Op. 30, Vanhal's harmonic choices and melodic shapes are more like Schubert's than like Beethoven's. (From the Preface by John and Virginia Strauss)
