Product description

Alexander Winkler's Viola Sonata in c minor op. 10 belongs to the rare repertoire for this instrument. With its romantic, sometimes boisterous tone colour, in which the formal skill of the thematic development particularly finds expression, together with its technical brilliance, it combines everything violists could desire. As in Winkler's lyrical 'Deux Morceaux' op. 31 for viola and piano, rich in contrasts and a swansong to the Biedermeier-style 'Scène dÆenfant' (Amadeus BP 1536), Winkler demonstrates admirably how to maintain a balance between modest technical demands and masterly compositional skill. The sonata was dedicated to a Monsieur Auguste Joung; this edition is based on the first edition, published in 1902 by M. P. Belaieff. Alexander Gustav Winkler, of German origin, was born in Kharkov on 3 March 1865. While studying law, up to 1887, he also trained as a pianist under I. Slatin in the music school of his hometown. He concluded his studies in 1889/90 with V. Duvernoy in Paris and T. Leschetizky in Vienna. While in Vienna, he also enjoyed lessons in composition and counterpoint with Carl Nawratil. In 1890 he returned to Kharkov to teach at the Girl's High School until 1896. He was then appointed professor for piano at the Petersburg Conservatoire. His pupils included S. Prokofiev, B. Assafiev and N. Myaskovsky. In 1924 he relocated to Besançon, where he directed the conservatoire until his death on 6 August 1935. Alexander Winkler, who saw himself as a composer of the 'New Russian School', was an active member of the composer's society founded by M. P. Belaieff, who was to publish his entire output. Winkler's legacy is primarily chamber music. His three string quartets op. 7 in C major, op. 9 in d minor and op. 14 in B flat major, are still valid today, and show him beautifully melding themes and counterpoint with his native melodic heritage. He also left a piano quartet in g minor op. 8, whose slow movement recalls Schumann, a piano trio in f sharp minor op. 17, the violin sonata in C major op. 20, a violoncello sonata in d minor op. 19 (completed by Glazunov in 1936) and the string quintet in E major op. 11, whose elegiac and melancholy melodies and national Russian rhythmic impetuosity, with fugal elements, make it well worth reviving.
